Cenote Diving Information & guidelines

BEFORE THE DIVE

oEquipment: Regular Open Water Scuba gear is used for guided cavern diving. The guide, who is a certified Cave Diver, uses specialized equipment, which has back-up gear for extra safety during the dive.

oGear configuration: Streamlining your gear is very important. Do not allow your gauge or octopus to be left dangling along the bottom of the cavern floor. These can also get caught up in the cavern line, which can be dangerous. Gear consists of: BCD, regulator, Mask and Fins. The snorkel must be removed completely – you are entering an overhead environment and the use of a snorkel is impossible and can also cause an entanglement in the cavern line. Gloves are not allowed in the cavern environment. Lights – These will be provided to you by your guide once you are in the water before your dive.

oPre-dive Checks: We assemble all our gear at the dive site before walking down to the entrance of the cenote. Make sure you have everything you need: mask, fins and weights. Check that you have everything secured before you enter the water.

Once in the water we will do the following check:

Buoyancy check: you will use less weight than in the ocean, but we have extra weights at this point in case you need more.

Regulators: Make sure that both regulators are working properly by taking a few deep breaths with the regulator in the water.

Bubble check: Your guide will check your gear, specifically your regulators, for any air leaks.
